GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park
in the park system. There are more than 800 miles of hiking trails that
include
12 major (most popular) trails. Maps of the hiking trails can be obtained
at the Park Visitor Center located at the park entrances near Pigeon Forge
TN. Sherwood Forest Resort is less than 2 miles from the National Park
and GSMNP info can also be obtained from the resort welcome center.
Some of the most popular hiking trails in the GSMNP include:
Ramsay Cascades - about 4 miles, with a 520' climb; it’s a moderate hike;
great for a short day-hike to magnificent 95-foot falls;
Laurel Falls - 1.25 miles on a paved trail, is a very popular short hike,
handicapped accessible, falls are great reward; Chimney Tops – a very challenging four
miles with a 1,300' climb through old-growth forest to the Chimney Top peaks;
Abrams Falls – about 5 miles round trip, with a 340' climb; a moderate
hike, with a somewhat flat trail leading to the beautiful 25-foot falls;
Rainbow Falls – This hike gains 4,000 feet in 6.7 miles, a challenging
hike, it’s the oldest trail to Mt. LeConte.
