Pigeon Forge, Tennessee: A Vacation in Paradise

The now thriving resort town of Pigeon Forge TN had very humble beginnings. Pigeon Forge's origin (along with the entire Great Smoky Mountain region) date back to the late 1920's. It was then that the federal government established a new national park in this mountain region that encompasses both Tennessee and North Carolina. This area was eventually christened the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). This new national park quickly grew in fame for its fascinating biological diversity and its stunning natural mountain vistas. The fall foliage grew in popularity such that today the Great Smoky Mountains attracts nearly 10 million visitors annually.

Before long the GSMNP and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee was numbered amongst the most visited parks in all of the United States and greater North America. It wasn't until the late 18th century that European settlers from the Carolinas followed the Pigeon River (pigeons were in abundance in the area) into the geographic area that became Pigeon Forge. It was after settler Isaac Love constructed an iron forge here in 1820 that the area grew to become known as Pigeon Forge TN. Another historic monument from that time, The Old Mill, remains open to the public and is now a National Historic Site. The town thrives as a resort destination with attractions aplenty and lodging including hotels and Smoky Mountain cabin rentals

After 1930, when the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was first established, this region of eastern Tennessee has been subject to many changes.
